I think that project 3 is different than any school project that I have ever done. I am exited to get to work on my self portrait and this is something that I think I will really enjoy. I have not decided yet if I want to start from scratch, or use a picture for my self-portrait, but I think both options would be fun and come out great. I am also exited to use more visual rhetoric. visual rhetoric is something that I find really interesting, and was my favorite aspect of project 1. I enjoy designing stuff, something that will probably play a major role in my future as an engineer, and I can’t wait to utilize visual rhetoric again in this project. Shipka’s idea about a composition “made whole” is that composition should not be considered exclusively in the form of words cohesively written on paper, but as a wide range of forms. Shipka writes about how things like texts, social media posts, letters, notes passed around by students in a classroom, and even the self-portrait that we are doing for project 3 can be considered a form of composition. Shipka focuses on the idea that composition “made whole” is something that is fulfilling the goals that the author had in mind when creating it. This means that if the author of the piece has a goal in mind, a message that they want to get across to the audience, and is able to rhetorically make his argument to the audience of the piece, than it is composition “made whole”. This idea strongly relates to our self portrait project. The goal of our project is to show who we think we are to our audience using a self portrait, and then describe our rhetorical goals and choices to the audience. If we can do this correctly, our composition will be “whole” according to Shipka’s ideas.
